A Long Way Back by Barbara Elsborg

5 stars

Tay and Ink are the stars of this book, which is the follow up to The Making of Jonty Bloom, where we first meet Tay.

Tay is on the long road to recovery having been in an accident. You'll have to read the first book to find out all about that - no spoilers here. However, once he'd emerged from his coma and begun to be independent again, Tay made the rash decision to move from Northumbria to London, but he's not coping. He has poor mobility and a dependency on pain killers, hence the need for a live-in carer. This is where Ink steps in - literally. Homeless, with only a dog and a guitar to his name, Ink is desperate for a roof over his head until he can work out how to move on from London. Ink has a secret past that he needs to stay hidden, but as Tay and Ink develop more than just a working relationship, both of their worlds come under threat.

The story is beautifully written. It is not as funny as TMoJB, but it does have its laugh out loud moments. Both Tay and Ink had much darker characters than Jonty and Devan, with some very sensitive issues, however, this made for intense and enthralling reading.

I loved this book. It was great to meet Jonty and Devan again, but really, Tay and Ink stand out as two very engaging characters on their own. It was hard to put this book down once I'd started, and I would highly recommend for an angsty, amusing, sexy and thrilling read.
